The Story Behind Brock Cliffhanger

Every great story begins with heart.

Brock Cliffhanger was created from something simple and powerful: love, imagination, and the belief that children should be encouraged to dream big.

​

The idea began with Jack, a bright, curious little boy who Author Mark Villareal met through his wife, Laura. What started as a family friendship quickly grew into a meaningful bond—Jack became like an adopted grandson to Mark and Laura. Together, they shared in Jack’s curiosity about the world and his excitement for learning new things.

While traveling for work, Mark and Laura loved surprising Jack with thoughtful gifts that sparked imagination and confidence. One memorable gift—an astronaut uniform from the Smithsonian—led Jack to proudly declare, “I want to be an astronaut!” Moments like that reinforced something Mark deeply believed: when children are encouraged, their dreams grow.

The inspiration for Brock Cliffhanger truly took shape when Mark discovered Junior Park Ranger guides, patches, and pins. Wanting to make the experience special, Mark created a character—Park Ranger Brock Cliffhanger—and began sending Jack letters and Jr. Ranger materials “from Brock.” One letter congratulated Jack on being selected as a Junior Park Ranger, and from that point on, every package arrived as part of Brock’s world.

Jack’s excitement was contagious. He eagerly shared what he learned with his younger brother Warren, and together they passed along their knowledge to friends in their neighborhood. Watching children learn, lead, and inspire one another planted a bigger idea—one that would eventually become a book series.

One early morning, that idea fully came together: The Adventures of Park Ranger Brock Cliffhanger & His Jr. Park Rangers.Jack and Warren became the first Junior Ranger characters, later joined by their sister, A’Miyah. What began as a single letter grew into stories rooted in mentorship, teamwork, responsibility, and respect for nature.

At its heart, Brock Cliffhanger is about more than adventure. The series reflects the values that shaped it—honesty, humility, service, paying it forward, and a deep love for our State and National Parks. Each story invites children to explore the outdoors, learn from role models, and understand that leadership begins with kindness and curiosity.

Born from love and nurtured through imagination, Brock Cliffhanger continues to inspire young readers to protect what matters, believe in themselves, and carry a sense of wonder wherever their adventures take them.
